Since the Virtuemart crew changed a lot of code in the latest version of Virtuemart 2 the old Search plugin (wich included the product images) has stopped working. Today We are releasing a new, working versions of these plugins.
The code is modified a lot, as well as the params. This version is not the modified Extended plugin, its the virtuemart simple search plugin with some features for Universal AJAX Live Search. The installer is one file for both Joomla versions.

This is a search plugin, wich means, it acts in the "background". It works together with the virtuemart search module, as a standalone it does nothing. The basic concept of these search engines is the following:
- A module or a component calls the plugin with the search parameters
- The plugin does the search and returns the results as an array of standard objects
- The module or component processes the results and shows the to the user
The reason behing this concept is, that many components use multiple search plugins, and by editing a plugin will not affect the component itself. The plugin acts like a black box.
So, the search facility you are refering to does not exist in this extension. You will need a search module(virtuemart search uses this plugin). I can recomment the Universal AJAX Live search product for you, this plugin is especially made for it!
